In the interest of accountability...

My cholesterol is, to quote Dr. Mike, "a bit elevated." 209 total, and the LDL:HDL is "not where we like to see things either." Yeah. I am really not surprised, what with my diet and exercise habits this past month. So back to minding my P's and Q's which I have not done since before vacation. Recheck in 6 months and all that jazz. The win: not passing out when the drew my blood. Don't laugh; it has happened before. In happier news, I will begin my new job with a squeaky-clean gut! I will visit the endoscopy center next Thursday. My husband is taking a rather unkind delight in this. Of course, we don't yet know his results...

No good deed goes unpunished...

There are two people in my household. One of us is faithful in certain areas of his (or her) health. The other has not seen a doctor in more than six years, and has not had a physical exam since he (or she) was required by the US government. No names, though. Ahem. Today, this all came to an end. My Jonathan and I each had an appointment with Dr. Mike, our new internist. Good wife that I am, I made the appointments, filled out the necessary paperwork, and showed my darling man where to sign. (No excuses, you see?) Everything went swimmingly; we each met with the good doctor and did the "visit to establish care" thing. Once we checked out and were in the car, I reviewed the particulars. Hmph. Monday morning is blood work (to be expected), and our physicals are later in the week. This was to be expected. What I did not expect was this: Jon walks out with an order for blood work- four tests, and his phys appointment card. I walk out with an order for blood work- EIGHT...

Brain Dump

1) Played Bunco last might with some dear girlfriends from church. Note: dried apricots stuffed with almonds are yummy. Note also: sometimes food can look unintentionally naughty. I brought the snacks in question to the Rock Star for his inspection-- he just shook his head. 2) I was not built for this heat. I have been listless, my gut is all upset, and I am praying for a break. The break should be here this weekend, just in time for... 3) Jon scored us a couple tickets to see Jane's Addiction Saturday night at Red Rock . Concert is outside at the pool. I am hoping this means we can at least stick our feet in the water. My favorite kind of show-- FREE! 4) Before said concert, we are going to grab a bite with a couple of Zappos peeps. I am looking forward to that as much as, if not more than, the concert. Frank and Fina's has some darned good guacamole. 5) Two movies in the last week: Get Smart, which made me laugh so hard that I truly thought I might wet my pants...

He could try to deny it, but the proof is there each time I look in the mirror. It's in the deep-set eyes, the high cheekbones, the long face that runs to hollow-cheeked when I am tired. It's all there. It is in my hands and feet- the fingers and toes so long and straight, the instep high. Many who know me say I am my mother all over again, or even "Little Madge," but that is mannerisms. No, I may act like Mudder, and hold my head like she and Gram do, but much of the raw material is Dad. Dad gave me his love of history, poetry, and Poe. In fact, he wanted to name me Lenore , a fight I am eternally grateful he lost! It is a lovely name, but I am not sure I could handle the knowledge that I was named after "the queenliest dead that ever died so young". (I never said the man was always practical!) We both tend to favor American History, though he prefers the Civil War Era and I lean more toward The Revolution. One summer, our travel plans included a day...

Getting out my can opener...

Most people who know me "IRL" know that I am pretty conservative, but that I am also very "live and let live." I prefer not to have the government telling me what I should do and how I should do it, therefore, I don't think the gov't should tell other people what they should do and how. I do feel, however, that each "right" I claim carries with it an equal responsibility. That is, is I believe that I have a right to life, I have a responsibility to honor that right for someone else ( i.e. do not kill him). I do not want the government telling me what faith I can hold or how to practice it; consequently, I have a very difficult time stomaching telling someone else if or how he can practice his. This all brings me to some word vomit on my jumbled thoughts and feeling about the news out of West Texas: 1) I reaffirm my belief that the government should be out of the business of marrying people. Many of the "evils"of polygamy (from a socia...

Not Mutually Exclusive- (video is PG)

(H/T to Gavin for the video) I think I am a person of above-average intelligence. Truly. However, I fail to see where science and faith are mutually exclusive. My mother is a scientist; my mother is also the person who was most instrumental in my spiritual formation. One of the finest scientific minds I know (that is, know personally) belongs to a man of great faith. Here goes the part where I alienate half (or maybe all) of the people who read my blog: I do not believe in a literal seven twenty-four-hour-day creation. I do, however, believe that we were created. I believe that an evolutionary model may offer some insight as to how we were created, but not why. For they why, I must rely on my faith, simple as it is. I do not believe that science and faith a re mutually exclusive. I do wonder, however, if science and religion are mutually exclusive. This video has me chuckling, but it is somewhat bittersweet. I think Richard Dawkins has been gifted with a brilliant mind and a...

Back in the saddle

So I have decided to try this from my phone. I am hoping that the convenience will help me update more frequently. It seems that I am seldom in one place long enough to get a post completed, with work being the one exception (for obvious reasons, not an appropriate place for blogging, even if I did have the time). Moving on... There has been and continues to be much going on in the life of the Rock star and me. We are both back in the land of full-time employment (actually, jon is working more than full time for now- trying to catch up our savings) and the cat seems to be missing all the time she got to spend with her daddy. Such is life. More ramblings and well-formed opinions to come (that part was a joke). -- Sent from Gmail for mobile | mobile.google.com Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes. Feast One hundred sixty-seven

Appetizer How much money do you plan to spend this upcoming holiday season? Our budget is really tight this year, but was always pay cash for Christmas. See, Mom, I did learn something! Soup What was the last television show you watched, and was it good? I watched The Unit online yesterday evening. Yes, it was very good. Salad If you had to paint the walls of your living room tomorrow, what color would you choose? I would go with a nice sage. I have a thing from green these days. Alas, we are stuck with Dover White. Main Course Name something clever or practical you have thought of that should be invented, but hasn’t yet. I had an idea for something the other day, but it has totally left me. Dessert List 3 things you would like to receive as gifts this upcoming holiday season. 1) The King Arthur Flour Whole Grains Baking cookbook. I checked it out from the library and am completely enamored of it. I looked for some of the recipes online, but no such luck. 2) Visits from family....

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.

1) They all hurt, as I spent today organizing the company storage unit. It would be safe to say that I will sleep well tonight. 2) Oh yeah, Hot Shots Part Deux is on tonight. I "heart" stupid movies. 3) I think it is super cool how people come back into our lives. 4) I love my husband. He is my number one earthly priority. 5) My new backpack came today. It is so orange. This is the second bag I have ordered from Kolobags, and I am still very pleased. 6) I am excited about my Gram coming for Thanksgiving.

Okay, okay

I apologize for causing undue stress (Charm City Kelly) with my earlier post. I cannot go into too many details as yet, but I will elaborate. For some time now, I have felt a certain disquiet. Never sure what it was, and VERY NERVOUS about asking God for clarification, I just simmered. I really do not like change, and I know that this disquiet is usually the precursor to change. Recently, a chance conversation with a friend brought some possibilities to light. I feel a little better prepared for whatever God has in store for me, which is a big deal for a girl who really likes to dig in her heels. See, even when I am too chicken to ask, He is ready to answer.

But I didn't even ask it, yet!

Today I had a prayer answered. A prayer that I hadn't yet gotten together the guts to pray. A prayer that I was still to fearful to pray. Wow. My God is so awesome. (And yes, Dad, I do really mean awesome. He fills me with awe) Film at eleven.

Wow. Just wow.

When I was in Jr high, a local high school teacher was fired to demonstrating the correct way to put on a condom. (A banana was used in the demonstration) Now I hear that Kings Middle School in Portland, Maine will be offering full range contraceptive services to girls as young as 11. Wow.

A change of season.

I maintain that October is Las Vegas makes up for the nasty summers. This week was our annual "turning off of the central air" ceremony. Windows are open (with security bars in place, Dad) and fans are running. I love autumn. I love waking up to a cold nose and snuggling into Jon (I am married to a furnace); I love the smell of woodsmoke in the air as the fireplaces get going; I love the distinct aroma of rotting leaves. I am an autumn kind of girl. Sweaters and soup and the end of daylight savings time. At the end of summer's oppressive heat is the cooling. Seasons are, quite possibly, my favorite part of God's creation. Right now, Jon's and my life is in a summer; it's hot, sticky, and uncomfortable. There are brief moments of artificial cooling, but we always have to get back into the heat. Fall is my reminder that summer is not endless; at the end comes the cool. God will send a cooling season for our summer, just as he sends the cooling season f...

Grey skies are gonna clear up...

And so on and so forth. Thanks to a lot of prayers and pray-ers(you know who you are) and a little old fashioned pounding of the pavement, things are looking up. I started a new job at the beginning of August. The office culture is good, the location could not be beat (just over two miles- walking distance when I am not too lazy), and the work is getting more interesting. The drawbacks are mostly lack of flexibility (I really miss being able to shuffle my hours around to tackle church projects and have the occasional lunch with a girlfriend) and a much higher stress level than I am used to. Jon starts a part-time gig as a production assistant for a show at a major resort. I dunno if it would be proper to divulge too many specifics, but the resort only has three letter to its name, and is a block off The Strip. Full time would be ideal, but this is good to keep things afloat until he is recalled (We are praying for the first part of October on that one.). The head game? That's ...

Weekly Consumption

There is pretty much nothing good about unemployment. I wanted to get that out of the way. It has, however, afforded me some reading and watching time that would otherwise not exist. This week's offering were pretty diverse: The Simpson's Movie I'll have to give this one a C-. If you love the TV show (which my husband does), you will love the movie (which he and millions of other Americans obviously did). There is pretty much nothing more to be said. I laughed a bit, but I really don't dig the humor so much. Beside, I was distracted by the inordinate number of CHILDREN IN THE THEATRE!!!! Big Love (Season 1, pilot and episode 2) I really want to like this show, truly. I have read nothing but good about it, and I want to be the type of person who "gets it" (how vain is that?). Confession: I don't "get it." Seems to me that the entire show is an excuse to show Bill Paxton having sex with three different women. I have the rest of t...

To Whom it May Concern:

You know who you are. You are the parents who though it would be a fun family outing to the cinema. But why choose such a kiddie flick as Ratatouille or Surf's Up! when The Simpsons Movie looks much more interesting? Sure, why not! Here's the thing: movies have ratings for a reason. PG-13 is most likey NOT APPROPIRATE for your 5-7 year old bairn. Not only that, but your children do not contribute to my enjoyment of the movie with their constant squawking and squirming. Thank you for your future consideration. Sincerely, The Lady in the Front Row. (In my defense, this movie outing was by way of a gift to my Jonathan. No way would I go see The Simpsons Movie on my own volition.

My Gram...

Image
My Gram turned 85 last Friday. She keeps a schedule that is just madness- sheer madness! Between her hospice volunteer work, Emmaus community events and groups, and running errands for various homebound friends, Gram does more at 85 than most people half her age. Last year, she came up to Vegas for Thanksgiving (she lives in Yuma, AZ). The evening before she headed home, we all went out to hear Jon's band play. The above pic is the result of a little fun we had when she dozed off. (It was after midnight) Please know that none of the empties are hers (neither bottles nor glasses)...

Potpourri...

So much is rattling around in my brain these days that I need to purge... -Togetherness is beautiful, and I not only love my husband, I also enjoy his company and like him. Having said that, I look forward to his return to full-time employment soon. Jon was laid off right before vacation (that is, the day we left) and I was laid off right after. Some more income sooner than later would be appreciated. -My being laid off is really just a kick in the pants from God. I had been very unhappy there for months, but really liking the money. Now I will be back in school full time and working part time. -The above hinges on Jon's working situation. He has an extremely good opportunity coming up, but we are playing the waiting game right now. We covet your prayers. -The waiting game is taking its toll on my mental health. IRL friends know that I have battled severe depression in the past. I am fighting its hold over me. I refuse to be ruled by irrational thinking!!!...
